Stop Getting in Your Own Way: Diane’s Story of Self-Sabotage

ree

Diane wanted change.

She was tired of feeling sluggish, tired of looking in the mirror and seeing someone who didn’t reflect the effort she swore she was putting in. She reached out to me for help, determined to “finally lose the weight.”

At first glance, she had everything lined up: a simple calorie plan, a clear protein target, and some easy workouts. Nothing extreme, nothing gimmicky. The roadmap was there.

But here’s the truth: Diane didn’t fail because her plan was too hard. She failed because she kept getting in her own way.

And that’s what most people do.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

Diane’s first slip wasn’t a missed workout or a cheat meal - it was a lie.

She told herself she was “eating clean” when her food log left out the handful of pretzels, the spoonful of peanut butter, or the nightly glass of wine.

Research shows most people underreport their calories by 20 - 40% - and not because they don’t know, but because they don’t want to face the truth.

The little things add up. Diane convinced herself those bites and sips “didn’t count.” But the scale doesn’t care about your excuses.

But It’s My Genetics!

Blaming genetics or your body’s chemistry is a VERY common thing.

So many want to think they are “just different” and can’t lose weight because of their body chemistry. Sorry, but that’s just B.S. and we all know it.

The real problem is you have a food addiction, and you can’t control what you put in your mouth.  That may sting to hear that - but it's the truth. We all can become food addicts just like someone can be addicted to drugs or alchohol - and you'll lie to yourself just the same.

The sooner you make peace with that, the sooner you will start seeing results.

Excuses Disguised as Reasons

Have you ever used these excuses.

“I had a stressful day at work.”

“It’s raining, I can’t walk outside.”

“My body must be different - it doesn’t respond.”

Sound familiar? These weren’t reasons for Diane’s failure; they were justifications for inaction. And each time she gave in, she strengthened the habit of quitting.

The reality is that the “easy wins” - like walking 20 minutes, hitting your protein, weighing yourself each morning, and tracking your foods accurately - are what create dramatic change.

But Diane thought she knew better and avoided doing what was truly needed to see the results.

The Social Media Trap

Diane spent more time scrolling than acting. Every new TikTok trend promised a faster, sexier result: “cut carbs,” “drink this detox tea,” “try this celebrity workout.”

nstead of sticking with a proven plan, she chased shiny objects until she was too frustrated to keep going.

Want facts? A recent study shows people who jump between diets every few weeks lose less weight than those who stick with any consistent method.

Diane thought she was staying “inspired,” but she was just sabotaging herself with comparison and distraction.

The Moment She Gave Up

Three weeks in, Diane stepped on the scale and saw the number barely move. She told herself, “It’s not working.”

Here’s the kicker: Diane had actually lost some fat - but she couldn’t see it yet. Her clothes were looser, her face was slimmer, but the scale hadn’t fully caught up. Instead of trusting the process, she quit.

A hard truth: You cannot spend the past 20 years eating poorly and abusing your body with food, but then still expect dramatic weight loss results in just a few days – that's not reality, and your body is trying to keep the fat you've created over the years.

Diane didn’t fail because the plan didn’t work. She failed because she stopped before the results could show.

The Truth Nobody Wants to Hear

Weight loss isn’t about the perfect plan. It’s about getting out of your own way.  It’s about consistency. Want results? Stop looking for quick fixes and do these things!

  • Track your food – and be honest about it.

  • Weigh yourself every day.

  • Stop making excuses when the real answer is, "Just start."

  • Don’t chase every new social media hack - stick with the basics.

  • And for the love of results, give it more than a few weeks before you quit!

Diane’s story is common, but it doesn’t have to be yours.

The people who succeed aren’t the ones with the most willpower or perfect genetics. They’re the ones who stop lying to themselves, stop making excuses, and do the boring, easy, repeatable things every single day.

At Accountable U Fitness, we won’t sugarcoat it: if you’re struggling, chances are the biggest obstacle isn’t your metabolism, your schedule, or your genetics - it’s you.

If you’re tired of starting over, if you’re sick of being Diane, it’s time to do something different.
